Landscape at Otford, Kent

Original drawing in brown ink and wash with touches of white gouache and red chalk, 1857, 142 x 220 mm., ex collection: Charles Ryskamp. Very fine and finished landscape drawing, with a prominent foreground tree, on laid paper, drum mounted to a decorative mount, matted and framed. The drawing is signed with initials in pencil and annotated "Otford 1857." It was exhibited at the Morgan Library and at the Yale Center for British Art. The late Charles Ryskamp was Director of the Morgan Library and later of the Frick Collection. Otford is just south of Shoreham, the home of Samuel Palmer and the meeting place of the Ancients, of which group Richmond was a primary member. Thus the drawing has both artistic and historical interest quite in addition to its being a memento of an important and much-missed figure in the American art world.
