View of Groningen, Holland

Original drawing in pencil on tan wove paper watermarked Canson & Montgolfier, and tipped down to an old French mount, 285 x 438 mm. The sheet is extensively annotated in pencil by the artist and bears his stamped signature. Lalanne was a superb draughtsman and the sheet is meticulous in detail and yet generally quite free in execution (the major verticals were done with a straight edge). Almost devoid of shading, the scene still comes alive because of its amazing depth achieved through the receding buildings at the left and the strategically placed figures of gradually decreasing size. Groningen is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands, a university town and once a semi-independent city-state and member of the German Hanseatic League. The major buildings of the main square remain as they were in Lalanne’s time though, with modern constructions, the overall scene is far less picturesque.
