The Wounded Scipio

Engraving, 1540s, Bartsch 81 only state, 200 x 272 mm. A very good and clear impression, lacking the intense blacks of the best ones, on laid paper without apparent watermark, trimmed on or just within the plate mark but with a narrow white margin outside the borderline. The work is after a lost fresco once on a building façade outside the Porta Angelica, Rome, and dating from before 1535. The subject is the elder Scipio wounded in combat against Hannibal and rescued by his son Scipio Africanus. The only state of the print bears the initials of Antonio Salamanca as publisher, indicating that it was commissioned by him and not a later reprinting.
