Heath, A Pleasant Draught

A Pleasant Draught for Louis, or the way to get rid of a Troublesome fellow

Etching with hand coloring, 1814, British Museum Satires 12268; Walpole Library N.D., 349 x 245 mm. Fine impression with fresh coloring on wove paper with good margins; browning at the very edges of the sheet and a short tear at the right edge. The “Louis” is XVIII, King of France from 1814, after the initial defeat of Napoléon I, to 1824 -- except for 111 days when Napoléon returned from Elba. Here Louis, newly returned from exile and installed as king, holds a tiny, screaming Napoléon half submerged in a glass of wine. The monarch looks contented, but it turned out to be not all that easy.
