Diamond

Mezzotint, 1799, British Museum 2010.7081.5312, 252 x 352 mm. Fine impression on thick, brownish wove paper with large margins; wormholes in the text area and one in the lower image, printer’s crease at the far left. Portraits of horses go back at least to Giulio Romano in the sixteenth century, but they were exceedingly popular in Britain in later times, and thus were translated to prints for wider consumption. The information given here includes the parentage of Diamond (Highflyer and Matchem), his owner (Mr. Cookson), and the fact that the image was “painted from life after his race with Hambletonian, at the Craven Meeting, Newmarket.” What is not said is who painted it and who engraved it, obviously negligible matters to those infatuated with race horses.
