Mezzotint and etching, ca. 1790s, Siltzer N.D.; British Museum 2010, 7081.3655, 341 x 373 mm. Superb, dark impression, perhaps better than the British Museum’s, on laid paper trimmed to a thread margin or just on the platemark.
Though mezzotint is generally thought of as a medium for portraiture, the technique was frequently applied elsewhere. And the technique, in this instance, was expanded by its combination with etching. This development was applauded by some, derided by others as a perversion and, indeed, it gives a somewhat different appearance to prints made that way, a crisper edge and less of the aura of an oil painting. Used with taste (it sometimes wasn’t), it continued to provide highly attractive images for centuries.
