A Water Meadow
Etching, and drypoint, 1859, 151 x 224 mm., Drake 20, published state; Harrington 21, 2nd published state; Schneiderman 23 iv/v. Provenance: Alfred Beurdeley (Lugt 421). Fine impression, on very thick wove paper with full margins, of the completed plate before cancellation (S. v/v). Although he had etched the odd plate earlier, as an avocation from his prominent medical career, Haden was really provoked into an artistic career by his younger brother-in-law Whistler and the latter’s success with his French set. Among his early works, Haden himself was very fond of this etching, a straightforward and spontaneous sketch of a country landscape without a sentient being in it. Although the impression lacks a pencil signature (Haden did not sign prints when he made them but would do so later upon request if a contribution were made to one of his favorite charities), the presence of Beurdeley's mark is evidence of its high quality.
