Floral Ornament Panel with a Winged Figure
Brown ink and wash over black chalk on laid paper, 172 x 426 mm. Provenance: LSL (?) (not in Lugt).
Drawn in line with total assurance and finished in wash, the sheet would seem to be a design for craftsman’s work, perhaps a sculpted panel for a fireplace (which would be mirrored by another panel on the left). The sheet is laid down, but through the backing can just be seen an old, brown ink but unreadable inscription, apparently in Italian, with the date 1621, which date is repeated recto far right in an ink different than that of the drawing. The facial type is close to some in drawings by Andrea Boscoli, but the sheet, though a handsome drawing, seems too generic for a specific attribution.
