Serge Koussevitzsky Playing the Double Bass
Original pencil drawing, ca. 1920, 199 x 149 mm. Koussevitzsky (1874-1951) was a great virtuoso of the double bass even before he became a conductor. He wrote a number of works for the instrument, includng a concerto which was, at one time, rather well known. He was the greatly beloved director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1924 to 1949. It has been suggested that this caricature was drawn by Mrs. Olga Koussevitzsky, who was known to have talents in that direction. It is, however, unsigned. On tan wove paper with a few creases.
