Le Sommeil d’Arianne
Tool-work engraving printed in colors, 360 x 287 mm., Portalis & Beraldi 16 ii/ii. A superb impression of this rare print, the colors fresh but subtle, on white laid paper trimmed on or along the plate mark but with ample white margin outside the oval image and text; a few minor pinholes. The purpose of the technique was to imitate fine pastel drawings and the rarity of the prints is at least partially the result of the complexity of the technique, which had a high failure rate in the registering and printing of impressions. It is almost impossible to visualize an elegant French eighteenth-century salon or bedroom without a selection of such prints hanging on the walls.
