Studies for “Washington’s Farewell to His Troops”
Original pencil drawing on papier calque, ca. 1941-2, 298 x 229 mm., squared for transfer and signed with the estate stamp. Hoffbauer was born in Paris of an Alsatian family, studied with Cormon and Gustave Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts, and won various prizes and medals -- which led to a successful career and an eventual election to the Legion of Honor. He served in the French army in World War I and survived, but in 1941 he escaped occupied France, came to America and became a citizen. Hoffbauer produced many easel paintings, but he was primarily a muralist and he continued that course in his new country. He was an indefatigable draughtsman, producing numerous and meticulous pencil studies for each detail of his large projects. This sheet is presumably one such study for the mural painting in the New England Life Insurance Company, Boston.
