Landscape with Herdsmen
Etching, 1648-50, Parthey 1213, Pennington 1213 i/ii, 150 x 215 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with good margins. According to the British Museum, the design is by Jacques d’Artois (1613-1686) and the print only published by Pieter van Avont. They cite a first state before the publisher’s address, which would make this impression ii/iii, the final state being that with Drevet’s address. From its origin, the scene is probably in Flanders, but it is generic enough to have been welcomed by a British audience as quite properly English and deserving of affection.
