Banquet Piece with a Covered Bowl, a Lobster and Game
Mezzotint, LeBlanc 483 (as John Smith); Wessely 480 (as John Smith); Ganz (PhD thesis, Yale University) 64 (as Robinson), 219 x 166 mm. Fine impression on heavy laid paper with narrow margins. Robinson’s works were often published by Smith, hence the earlier confusion. He was a master of mezzotint technique and his still-lives and game pieces were his best works, exhibiting a free and fanciful arrangement of elements and a flare for enlivening them by putting them just slightly askew. His prints are quite rare.
