The Night Picket Boat at Hammersmith
Mezzotint, 1916, 300 x 454 mm., Hardie 125 only state. Superb impression on heavy wove paper with full margins, signed in pencil; a few marks of foxing in the margins only. Although Hardie makes no mention of the size of the edition, it is likely to have been quite small, as the delicate effects and subtle contrasts would have worn quickly in printing. No impression of the print has been found at auction in the last 20 or so years.
Short was the master of all intaglio techniques of print making and when he found a subject and composition worthy of his abilities, the result was invariably a stunning image. That a good part of his work was after the designs of other artists takes nothing away from his own original compositions.
