The Man of Sorrows, Half Length
Woodcut, ca. 1490, Schreiber 875, 88 x 60 mm. A very good impression, with slight dry printing, on laid paper with good margins, an old, scratched-out pen and ink inscription in the lower margin. This is a single-leaf woodcut, not a book illustration, but printed on a single sheet as a private devotional image. Such early woodcuts are often extremely rare and Schreiber, in his exhaustive catalog of such images, cites only two impressions of this one, both uncolored and both printed in a grey-black ink, one of them in his own collection. This is the impression from the Schreiber collection. The image of the Man of Sorrows was popularized by the widespread cults devoted to the wounds and blood of Christ in late medieval and early Renaissance times, and the type with hands crossed apparently first appeared in 13th-century Italian painting. The crown of thorns here is capped by a cruciform halo.
