El de la Rollona (Nanny’s Boy)
Aquatint and etching from Los Caprichos (plate 4), 1799, 205 x 151 mm., Harris 39 iii/iii probably Third Edition (1868). A very good impression before the plate bevel, on wove paper with good margins. Goya is working here from dark to light, with the aid of burnishing, a novel approach to aquatint. His commentary on the image: “Negligence, tolerance and spoiling make children capricious, naughty, vain, greedy, lazy and insufferable. They grow up and yet remain childish. Thus is nanny’s little boy.” Goya’s Caprichos were published in many editions, the plates wearing considerably with each printing. The second and third editions (1868), though, were printed exceedingly well, generally show little wear, and are only slightly inferior to the best of the first edition at a fraction of the price.
