Femme Assise

Etching and engraving from Figures de Modes, 118 x 75 mm., Dacier & Vuaflart 50 iv/vii. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed inside the platemark but outside the borderline and signature. Despite the many prints after his work, the only prints etched by Watteau himself were the Figures de Modes, which were afterwards finished in engraving by Thomassin. Etched states before the rework are unobtainable. So this is as close as we come to an original print by Watteau and it is even still signed “Vatteau inv. et fecit.” It is simple and graceful, the etched lines clearly visible in places, elsewhere covered by the “finishing.”
