St. Mary Magdalene
Etching with touches of engraving, 139 x 101 mm., Dutuit 28, Hollstein 12, Van Gelder 7 ii/iii. A very good impression of this rare print on laid paper with the watermark of a crowned fleur-de-lis in a shield with the initials PE (not in Heawood), with narrow margins. The first state is before Rubens’ name at the lower left, but in no state is there a signature of the etcher. The work has been traditionally give to Buytewech (and is similar in style to other etchings by him) and Hollstein lists it among his works, but Havercamp-Begemann suggests Lucas Vorsterman as the author. Vorsterman did indeed make prints after Rubens, the only problem being that they are apparently all engraved rather than etched as here. No one, however, disputes Rubens as the inventor of the image.
