Old Putney Bridge
Etching, 1879, 198 x 293 mm., Kennedy 178 iv/iv.
A fine, transparent impression with beautifully modulated plate tone, printed in brown ink on laid paper with the watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a shield and the letters GR, trimmed on the platemark and signed in pencil on the tab with the butterfly and the word imp. The fourth state, as here, has a few added lines in the water at the right and is thought to have been printed shortly after Whistler returned from Venice late in 1880. The individual wiping of the plate would seem to support that thesis, as the image is far more atmospheric, far more like the Venetian plates, than the more clean-wiped earlier states. A short tear at the top of the sheet has been neatly mended and is almost invisible.
