Etchings, 1765, 207 x 252 mm., Hédou 42-47 iii/iii, LeBlanc 104-109, Portalis & Béraldi 7. Very fine, sharp impressions on thick laid paper with large margins and in fresh condition. The set includes a title page, a Finnish merchant carrying his provisions to market, the sellers of frozen fish, the seller of live fish and the seller of sturgeon eggs (caviar), the return from the market and the milk seller of Oetha. The scenes are mostly snow bound, the sled the principal means of transportation, and the images exotic enough to have tickled the fancy of Frenchmen curious to know what the rest of the world might be like. On the title, LePrince, instead of dedicating the work to the King or some nobleman or high official, dedicates it to François Boucher “from his very obedient servant and his student, LePrince.” Sold as a set.
