Etching, 144 x 208 mm., DeVesme 25, Pallucchini & Guarnati 27, Bromberg 28 ii/ii. A fine impression on laid paper with the watermark “I” (apparently unrecorded) and with small margins. The scene, although possibly constructed from real elements, probably existed nowhere except in Canaletto’s imagination. But whether he worked directly from reality, imaginatively modified it, or created his own realities, it is the conveyance of atmosphere and the masterful manipulation of light that make Canaletto’s etchings unique and wonderful. Excepting only the earliest works, these are not simple transfers of drawings, but meticulously planned and executed marvels of etching that give up their technical secrets on close examination and then once again revert to pure poetry.
