Description: |
Strong, broadly drawn compositional sketch in brush and black ink and grey wash on brownish laid paper with a watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a crowned shield. An old attribution to Elisabeta Sirani, but the drawing is clearly Dutch and Rebrandt influenced. Jacob sits on a rock by a tree, his hands clasped; the angel hovers just above him. The broadness of style seems similar to the cited drawing by de Hooghe, once with Houthaker, but the sheet could be by Jurgen Ovens or some other later member of the Rembrandt school. |
