Description: |
A fine proof impression, before letters and before colors, printed on chine volant now backed with linen, with good margins; a crease, a repaired tear and a surface abrasion in the image. Though clearly a proof, the work presents problems of identification as none of the reference materials provide an image or dimensions or even a description of the subject. The work is clearly related to the Belle Jardiniere calendar of 1896, but is much larger than those prints, too large to be a cover for them. Both BN Inv and Arwas mention another cover for a Belle Jardiniere calendar, though Arwas describes it as a color woodcut. In fact, the work is a small poster (affichette), the colors added later apparently by lithography, and not previously described. The very attractive image shows a young lady in a garden plucking flowers from a tree. There are three foliage-bordered blank areas (as in the earlier Belle Jardiniere calendar) in which the text, whatever it was, would later appear. Grasset's monogram appears in the image. To complete the mystery, a blind stamp reading H7 R 9K appears in the lower margin, clearly added after the work was linen backed, and also clearly unidentifiable as to origin or purpose. |
