| Description: | Fine, finished drawing on blue laid paper, laid down to an old French mount. In a drawing room two elegantly dressed young women are standing, one adjusting a locket around the neck of the other. The latter is smiling and holding in her two hands, a sheet of paper, perhaps a letter. Behind her is a shelf , probably the top of a fireplace, with a vase. At the right, in front of a screen, is a chair and table with a coffee urn, cups and a few flowers. The work was previously sold (Sotheby's, London, July, 1988, $5238) as attributed to Lavreince (Lafrensen) the Elder (1698-1756), but it is far more likely to be by the Younger. | | | |
