Description: |
Lightly drawn but sensitive portrait in red chalk on brownish laid paper, inscribed by the artist with the subject's name, the date and the place (Cadix or Cadiz). Clearly, it was done during Schauss' travels to Spain, where Postnikoff was also a visitor or emigré. The sitter is a man of older middle age, hair thinning but long, moustache and beard, seen in bust length. The name seems somehow familiar, but research has not uncovered anything about him. Schauss was a fine portraitist, if rather mawkish in his genre subjects. |
