Description: |
Very lovely little watercolor, the execution rapid but a complete and finished statement, on fine laid paper with the watermark of a hunting horn and a star or sun (not in Briquet or Churchill, but almost certainly French); laid down on a larger sheet of thin japan. The figures are beautifully drawn; the landscape is classic, typical of the Roman campagna via Claude Lorraine, though the drawing style is quite different from the latter. Allegrain did at least two drawings with this style of landscape (one in the MMA) and though the figures here are not as elongated as in that drawing, the overall handling seems similar. |
