Description: |
Typically small but finished drawing with two figures near the tower at the right, other buildings in the distance at the left. An illegible word is written on the tower, perhaps its location. The attribution was confirmed by Martin Royalton-Kisch, then Assistant Keeper of Dutch and Flemish drawings at the British Museum. Compare also Bernt Nos. 502 and 527. Saftleven made many such small studies. Originally in inventory and sold in 1989 and repurchased from the estate of Paul Waite, the original buyer whose notes are on the mat. |
