Description: |
Fine impression on laid paper with the watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a shield and with narrow or thread margins, the sheet in fresh condition. The story, from Roman mythology, and included in Ovid's Metamorphosis, concerns Vertumnus, disguised as an old woman, attempting to seduce the nymph Pomona. The attractive scene here is in an ornate garden with trees, shrubs, statuary, fountains, peacocks and, of course, a collection of fruits on the ground near Pomona, who had dedicated herself solely to the cultivation of her garden. |
