Description: Very fine impression in brown on a full, large sheet of wove paper (3 deckle edges) with the watermark "Willcox, Philada," signed in pencil. The plate was done on commission for the Haworth Edition of Bronte's "Jane Eyre" published by Robert M. Lindsay, Philadelphia, 1884, in an edition of 500. There were only 5 proof impressions taken before this edition. The image is after a print by E. M. Wimperis. "Lowood" is the fictional name of Cowan Bridge, a Clergy Daughters School which was attended by the Bronte sisters as "charity children" and where they were miserably treated.
