Description: Fluent yet precise drawing showing a street scene in Leicester (where Austin was born) with the steeple of St. Martin's in the background, on thick wove paper with drawn framing lines, signed and dated in pencil. The dimensions are of the sheet; the actual drawing measures 246 x 116 mm. Four years after the drawing, Austin made an etching of essentially the same composition, shortened at the left and the perspective squeezed a bit vertically. In the interval between the two, he served as a gunner with the British forces in World War I. This is a work of Austin's youth (he was 20), and while hardly in his mature style, shows his abilities as a draughtsman far more advanced than his print making, which had just begun.
