Description: |
Fine impression on laid paper with large margins; a pale water stain in the left margin and a tiny rust spot in the right. The set of six was meant as designs for tapestry or screens to serve as door curtains. Each contains an image of a deity on a complex altar surrounded by attributes and ornamental elements. Although Gillot etched six plates (and duplicates of several), they were all left incomplete. Five of them were finished by C. N. Cochin the Younger. This one, the sixth, is actually a reverse copy by Cochin of Gillot's uncompleted plate and it was included in the set published by Huquier in Paris. Although in reality a work by Cochin after Gillot, it is listed here under Gillot's name as part of the set. Only a single impression of Gillot's original plate of this subject is known. |
