Description: |
A good but somewhat later impression with a lack of contrast in the shadows, some of the background greying out, on laid paper with narrow margins, laid down to heavier paper; a small but strong brown spot at the left of the figure. Though a first state has been described (before the E.F. signature on the verses), Strauss notes that no impression of it is today extant). Helmeted and armed single figure seen from the back, a battle between two single warriors, watched by opposing armies in the background. Marcus Valerius vanquished a Gaul with the assistance of a raven. The bird is seen over the head of the two warriors. |
