Description: |
The central drawing, within framing lines, is a full-length study of a peasant woman with a rake in a treed landscape, a village in the distance. Very much a printmaker's drawing, the face is blank but the trees meticulously shaded. At the left of the main drawing, multiple sketches of men plowing, raking, sitting. At the right, an incomplete formal border of decorative foliage. The drawing is on laid paper without signature or identification of any sort. It may be by Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) or by Leon L'Hermitte (1844-1925). Robert Johnson has offered the speculation that it could be by the German artist Heinrich Vogeler, a suggestion that necessitates further research. |
