| Description: |
Based on Hogarth's own painting for the Foundling Hospital, a most appropriate subject for that institution. Very good impression (background greying) on laid paper with large margins on three sides, but printed towards the top of the sheet so cut there on the platemark. The final state but on the same paper as other pre-Boydell editions and therefore probably also before that edition of ca. 1780. The painting itself apparently owes much to Poussin. |
