Fine impression of this heavily-etched plate, traces of the guidelines for the text still showing, with small patches of dry printing in the darkest areas, on laid paper with full margins; old vertical centerfold. The scene is at night, the only sources of the illumination the lamps around the canal, statues and structures. The milling crowd in the foreground, the trees in the allees, and the boats on the canal are seen as totally black silhouettes. In its way, a curiously effective print. |
