The Expulsion from Paradise
Engraving, 1543, 81 x 56 mm., Bartsch 7, Pauli 8 iii/iii. Provenance: Erich von Rath (Lugt 2721); Richard Lachmanski (L.2223b).
Very fine impression on laid paper with thread margins or trimmed on the platemark, the borderline visible all around and the tablet descending below the borderline. The work is very freely based on figures from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, but the conception of the angel appears to be completely original. One of Beham's greatest prints.
