Raphael and His Mistress

Chiaroscuro woodcut from four blocks, Bartsch 3 i/ii, Servolini (Ugo da Carpi) 11 IIA, Chatsworth Sale (Christie’s London, 1985) lot 119 note, i/ii, 292 x 226 mm.,ex collection Giuseppe Storck, Milano, 1799 (Lugt 2319). Fine, deeply impressed impression on laid paper with an indistinct circular watermark, printed from four blocks (black and three shades of ochre), slightly trimmed at the top, the remainder apparently complete. Like the Chatsworth impression (which has a similarly described watermark), the shadow in the doorway is unbroken at the top (partially broken here at the bottom). This, then, is earlier (an earlier state) than the MMA impression reproduced in TIB. The dimensions are slightly smaller than the Chatsworth impression but the composition is complete except at the very top. An ink dot (printer's ink?) above the man's head and ink smudges verso. The Chatsworth catalog mentions that the composition may be after Polidoro, though it is conventionally catalogued as after Raphael. RARE.
