Timbalier et Trompette Turcs

Etching and engraving, 1670, for the Festival Book of the Carrousel of 1662, 309 x 260 mm., B. N. Inventaire 1054-96, pl. 38. Fine, fresh impression on the almost full sheet of laid paper with the full text below, as published by the Imprimerie Royale. The Carrousel took place at the Palais du Louvre in the now-named Place du Carrousel, and was given in honor of Maria Teresa, bride of Louis XIV. It was an incredibly lavish display of choreographed processions, horse races, ballets and dramatic readings, for most of which music was specially composed by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The equally lavish book commemorating the proceedings, from which this print derives, was only published eight years later.
