Maria Magdalena in the Wilderness

Etching and engraving, 1573, 487 x 355 mm., Bierens de Haan 118 i/iv, Hollstein 118 i/iv. Fine impression of the scarce first state, on laid paper backed with thin japan, trimmed along the platemark which is visible in places; flattened creases and two small blue stains in the sky. Cort was a Dutch engraver, but spend the last twelve years of his life in Italy where he engraved plates after some of the greatest Italian masters.. He had a brilliant technique and particularly excelled in complex landscapes, often used as settings for religious themes.
