Jacob's Dream of the Ladder

Engraving, ca. 1560, Nagler Monogrammisten III-1806, 254 x 357 mm. A fair, later impression with the address of Carlo Losi and a printing date of 1673, on laid paper trimmed unevenly along the platemark; repaired tear and tiny surface loss on the word "Roma." Bossius was a Flemish artist who worked in Rome from 1551 to 1563. The subject, not as often represented in graphic art as one might think, derives from Genesis 28: "He had a dream: there was a ladder, planted on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; and God's angels were going up and down on it."
