Henri Liberti

Etching and engraving, 266 x 196 mm., Dutuit 180 ii/iii, ex collection: Pierre Mariette, 1668 (Lugt 1788). Brilliant impression on laid paper, trimmed just outside the borderline but with the full text below; a spot of brown ink in the title, old glue and mounting paper at the corners verso. Liberti (ca. 1600-1669) was the celebrated organist of Groeningen and Antwerp cathedrals as well as a composer. In the portrait he holds the manuscript of a canon for four voices on the text “Ars longa, vita brevis,” which is engraved with such exactitude that it could be performed from this print. Dutuit mentions an impression signed “Mariette, 1670.” This one preceded it in Mariette’s collection by two years.
