January in the Omnibus

Original drawing in watercolor over pencil, 1902, 243 x 243 mm. Fine, finished watercolor on cream wove paper, signed with the artist’s “crab” stamp and inscribed by him in pencil “Le Janvier Ornnibus, Bülowstrasse, Stetin Bahnhof” and inscribed verso “Janvier 1902.” Laboureur was a superb draughtsman and, like his teacher Auguste Lepère, a master of every print making technique. His early works, however, before he developed his art deco style, tend to look more like those of Vuillard than of Lepère. For a quintessentially French artist, he traveled rather extensively, making early trips to Germany, the United States and Canada, and also visiting Britain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. So it is not unusual to see somewhat exotic scenes filtered through his very French artistic personality.
