Sonnius, Ornament with a Motto

Ornament with a Motto

Engraving ca. 1557, 69 x 52 mm., Nagler Monogrammisten V-167, ex collection: Lenormand du Coudray (1712-1789) (Lugt 1704). Very fine impression on laid paper, trimmed on the platemark, which is visible in places; nick at the lower right. This gorgeous little ornament print, the product of an obscure French engraver, is of the greatest rarity. The composition is complex and crowded. In the central panel, a snake, symbol of evil, is thrust into the fire by the hand of God. The motto, appropriately, is "If God be for us, who can be against us."
