Bompiani, A Nun Turning

A Nun Turning the Pages of a Large Missal

Original watercolor with touches of gouache, fully signed, 483 x 305 mm. A nicely painted scene, in subtle colors, by this Roman-born artist. Bompiani, who came from a family of painters, studied at the Academy of San Luca and was later one of the founders of the Accademia Raffaello Sanzio. The musical notations of the missal here are correctly shown as black notes on a red staff of four (not five) lines, the text beneath, not an attempt to reproduce the music itself, but a testimony to the artist's powers of observational accuracy.
