Tour Eiffel – Frontispice
Wood Engraving, 1889, from À l’Exposition Universelle, 1889, 245 x 167 mm., Lotz-Brissonneau p. 267. Very fine impression on japan tissue with full margns from the edition of 35 as published by Desmoulins, signed and numbered in ink by Lepère. No exhibit devoted to Paris could pass without an image of the Eiffel Tower and this one, made as the frontispiece to the set of images of the Paris Exposition, dates from the very year the tower was built. The Eiffel Tower was designed to be the grand entrance to the Exposition, and the image here shows, to the side and behind the structure, some of the other buildings of that great fair, virtually all of them now no longer standing, as well as one, small, decrepit shack at the left that obviously had not been gotten out of the way in time for the grand opening. The contrast is amusing.
