Au Bord de Gein près Abcoude

Etching, ca. 1875, 165 x 240 mm. Superb impression on chine-appliqué with full margins, signed in pencil. Talk about forgotten printmakers ! And yet this exquisite little etching of a Dutch river scene is quite amazingly accomplished and a prime example of an artist whose name was once more than familiar. The impression has a penciled note on the back: “If I were restricted to the possession of six modern etchings this would be one of them…One of the most perfect etchings produced by the modern schools”. The quotation comes from P. G. Hamerton’s Etching and Etchers, second edition, 1880, one of the most influential books of the time. Talk about undervalued!
