Quai de Métro, Heure de Point

Lithograph with hand coloring in gouache, ca. 1910, 456 x 183 mm. Fine impression, the hand applied colors fresh, on wove paper with full margins, signed in pencil and from the stated edition of 100, although how many of those were colored is unknown. Devambez, under the influence of his father, began his career as a commercial artist, illustrating menus, invitations, magazines, etc. However, with a Prix de Rome behind him, he went on to more serious, although often light-hearted, artistic pursuits. He made many small paintings, various etchings, posters, continued his work as an illustrator of books and magazines and produced a small number of lithographs. This one is both typical, in its multiplicity of figures in an unconventional composition, and outstanding, as a totally finished, brilliant comic image.
