Loser - Altaussee, Austria

Drawing in pencil and watercolor on wove paper, 1921, 383 x 485 mm., signed, dated and inscribed with the location in pencil. Jungnickel was a noted master in Vienna, his print work being mostly of animal subjects in color woodcut, and he is especially renowned as an animalier. But he was known for landscape painting and drawing as well. The fascinating thing about this ostensibly realistic depiction of a well-known mountain near Salzburg is how the artist has picked out patterns, derived from Viennese Jungendstil, in the topography. The color is applied in small touches and the underlying drawing is, at the same time, both strongly depictional and ornamentally decorative. A superb drawing.
