Jeune Fille Cousant (Young Lady Sewing)

Drypoint, 1877, Béraldi 13, Knyff 16, Musée de Pontoise 6, 120 x 78 mm. A fine impression on laid paper with small margins, signed with the red stamp on a projecting tab. Goeneutte was a close friend of Buhot’s and made several paintings and at least one print obviously akin to works by his older colleague: Le Boulevard de Clichy par un Temps de Neige. Most of his work, though, took other directions, sometimes, late in his brief career, even drifting into symbolism. This early print, actually a portrait of his sister Nathalie, shows the sort of intimate scene in which he was frequently at his best and, though the technique is totally different, seems to presage Vuillard.
