Jubal, the Maker of Musical Instruments

Engraving, 1583, from The History of the First Men (Boni et Mali Scientia), 195 x 248 mm., The Illustrated Bartsch 70-127 i/ii, Hollstein 27 i/ii, Wurzbach 8. Fine impression on laid paper, trimmed just outside the borderline and text; printer’s crease, two tiny holes, a few dots of staining and some skinning on the reverse. Jubal is the biblical father of musicians and musical instruments. The son of Lamech and the grandson of Methuselah, he is mentioned once, early in Genesis, and never appears in scripture again. His half-brother, Tubal-Cain, the original worker in iron and brass, is sometimes credited with inventing the brass instruments.
